Objective

Turn what the team has learnt into questions worth designing for.

When to use it

Between research and ideation, when the team has insights and pain points but no shared challenge yet.

Outcome

A clustered, prioritised set of How Might We questions to ideate on.

Preparation

Sticky notes, the research insights on a wall or a board, and a clear problem statement.

Steps

    Review5 min

    Read back the insights and pain points.

  2. 2

    Write10 min

    Everybody rewrites problems as “How might we…” questions, one per note.

  3. 3

    Cluster10 min

    Group similar questions and name each group.

  4. 4

    Prioritise5 min

    Vote on the questions to ideate on first.

Facilitator tips

  • Too broad (“How might we fix onboarding?”) or too narrow (“…add a button?”) — aim between.
  • Keep the solution out of the question.
